Archangel's Heart by Nalini Singh ~Review & Excerpt~

This is one of the most loving looks into Raphael and Elena’s relationship the series has had in a while. Don’t get me wrong; the mystery, ongoing intrigue, and “political maneuvering” is still strong in the world of Archangels, but the foundation of these two is stronger, sexier, and steadier than it ever has been. It’s a mature coupling that continues to grow and thrive among the crazy narcissistic group that makes up the Cadre.

Having been called to the Luminate compound, Elan will uncover an unthinkable reality hidden away by sheer arrogance. No one would suspect that they would dare to be undermined, but alas, the phrase “pride goeth before fall” comes to mind. I was shocked and saddened to see what something that’s supposed to be an enlightened and spiritual place is capable of.  It’s a very real read in the fantasy world that, in all honesty, could be ripped from a modern times headline.

Having said that, it is also a fantastic example of never giving up hope and finding peace. Honestly, it’s been one of my favorite reads of the series.

New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh takes us into a dangerous and exhilarating world where a deadly, beautiful archangel and his once-mortal consort are caught in a fury of twisted darkness…

One of the most vicious archangels in the world has disappeared. No one knows if Lijuan is dead or has chosen to Sleep the long sleep of an immortal. But with her lands falling into chaos under a rising tide of vampiric bloodlust, a mysterious and ancient order of angels known as the Luminata calls the entire Cadre together to discuss the fate of her territory.

Accompanying her archangelic lover Raphael to the Luminata compound, guild hunter-turned-angel Elena senses that all is not as it seems. Secrets echo from within the stone walls of the compound, and the deeper Elena goes, the uglier the darkness. But neither Raphael nor Elena is ready for the brutal truths hidden within—truths that will change everything Elena thinks she knows about who she is…

Nothing will ever be the same again.

Excerpt from ARCHANGEL’S HEART by Nalini Singh – releases November 1, 2016

Raphael’s response was silent, his wing brushing hers as he . . .

“Raphael!” The damn archangel had dusted her.

Glittering, sparkly stuff stuck to her, delicious beyond compare when she parted her mouth and it licked onto her tongue. Her thighs clenched. “This is not funny!” She glared at him even as arousal flooded her system, but he was laughing too hard to care.

Her heart, it just stopped.

Even now, the Archangel of New York rarely laughed and never like this. Until she could see the youth he must’ve once been, with eyes of a wild, astonishing blue that asked a woman to laugh with him. She’d never before seen him as truly young. How could she? He had so much power that it pulsed in his every touch, burned in his skin.

Hauling him close to her with her hands fisted in the cream linen of his shirt, she took a kiss, took him. He sank into her, his wings sweeping up to wrap around her until all she could sense was Raphael, all she could taste was him. And angel dust. The special blend he’d created just for her.

He pushed one hand into her hair, fisting it as he wrapped his other arm around her waist and backed her up against a wall. Something fell with a dull thud. Maybe the vivid painting of wildflowers that had just been put up, all the art having been taken down during the repainting.

Elena loved that simple piece Honor had found in a thrift shop, but right now, it could’ve been a priceless artwork by the Hummingbird and she wouldn’t have cared. She was far too happy to be pressed up against the hard warmth of her archangel tip to toe after spending the previous night on watch. No time for shenanigans with Dmitri away and Illium off-shift, Aodhan assigned to patrol the sea border, and Raphael dealing with the overall security situation.

She’d flown a proper defense grid, both to stay in practice and because none of them could afford to be blas├ę with the Cascade an unpredictable foe that could unleash itself at any moment, smashing the world back into chaos and, possibly, war.

Today, however, the others were onshift and she could kiss her lover. He burned hot, Raphael, but he was a crashing sea in her mind, a tumultuous, passionate storm that swept her up and thundered through her veins.

We can talk to Dmitri later, she sent to Raphael, sliding her hands up the ridges and valleys of his chest. Let’s go upstairs to our suite.

She tried to ignore that pointed cough that held a biting amusement.

Raphael’s lips smiled against hers. I think my second has other ideas.

You can often find her writing compared to JR Ward, but if you are a fan of the Black Dagger Brotherhood be warned that Setta Jay's novels are more erotic in nature.

Q & A with Setta Jay

When did you know writing was what you wanted/needed to do?

I’d always been in love with the idea of writing, but it wasn’t until I turned thirty that I found the courage to do something about it. I never finished college or studied literature so I was riddled with self-doubt. I think it was something Stephanie Meyer said about the best writers being avid readers. I wish I could remember exactly what she said, but I wasn’t able to find it when I did a quick online search. The moral of the story is that whatever she said struck a cord and inspired me to move past my fears. I’ve been a huge reader since childhood and fell in love with romance very early, likely way too early since I was sneaking my older sister’s bodice rippers. lol I think avid readers naturally think of the stories they wish they could read, so after I hit thirty I decided I’d write the stories I’d love to see. It took a while to find my way, but once I did, it was an incredibly rewarding experience.

Does any music/situations/media inspire your writing process? If so, what?

It seems like inspiration can spring up anywhere. Sometimes it’s a song lyric or just the feeling I get from certain music. And it could definitely come from something I see or hear on a show or in social media. For some reason the story telling in country music seems to motivate me to sit down and write in general. As for specific situations, I played Jason Aldean’s Burnin It Down over and over when writing Tempting Ecstasy. And a sexy gif I saw on Tumblr inspired a sex scene in Divine Ecstasy. Also, a line from the TV show the Royals inspired my upcoming contemporary series. When plotting the new contemporary I tended to replay a song by The Penfifteen Club a ton.

Will we see any new works from you soon? What will they be?

Book ten in the Guardians of the Realms series is scheduled for release on December 28, 2016. That’s the last book in the series, but I’m excited to start a Guardian spin-off in 2017. I’m not quite ready to let go. I’m also officially starting a romantic/erotic suspense series next year. It’s been something I’ve been thinking about and plotting for a while and I’m really excited for the challenge in writing outside my current genre.

Favorite wine and favorite chocolate :)

Any wine you stick in front of me. Lol I love red. Like a great Chianti, minus the fava beans. J I usually order Cabernets. Sometimes I switch it up with whites like Pinot Grigio, Riesling or Gew├╝rztraminer (although I butcher the name). I’m definitely not a wine snob. As long as you put it in a glass I’m good to go.

As far as chocolate… that’s tough. I’m apparently not all that picky when it comes to my vices. I like chocolate best with other things, like caramel… or in a Snickers. Nothing too fancy. ;)

Top five reads? (all time or current, your choice)

Five! How?! Let’s see… if I narrow it down to paranormal romance I might be able to come close.

- Several of Larissa Ione’s Demonica and Lords of Deliverance books should be on the list.
- Gena Showalter had a couple of amazing Lords of the Underworld and Alien Huntress books.
- I also fell in love with a ton of Lora Leigh’s Breeds.
- Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changling series has too many favorites to count.
- Oh, and I love some of Cynthia Eden’s. I think it was Night Watch that was one of my fav series.
  Oh, and the Phoenix Fire.
- And how can I not include several of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunters?

There’s still so many more and I already cheated! I may as well go for broke now. Kristen Ashley’s The Three series, Burn by Suzanne Wright. See, you just can’t stop me! lol

What’s the best way fans can reach out to you?

I love to hear from fans and try to keep up with messages everywhere I can think of looking. Email is good, I also check messages in Goodreads, Facebook and Twitter.

Dragon Heartstring A Vale of Stars Prequel by Juliette Cross

Demetrius Cade has long since let go of his prejudice against Morgonkind, the dragon hybrid race his father taught him to hate. But what he never saw coming was the Morgon woman who would finally teach him to love.

Shakara Icewing has watched Demetrius Cade from afar for years. Known as the most eligible bachelor and emotionally unavailable in all of Gladium Province, she sees him as the aloof, arrogant brother of her dear friend. But when they finally meet, she isn’t sure she can handle how deep and how fast they both fall.

An old enemy resurfaces and once more threatens those Demetrius loves. When Shakara plans to speak before Parliament against business tycoon Aron Grayson, she puts her own life in the line of fire. Demetrius will stop at nothing to protect the woman he can no longer live without.

From the onset of this series we have been on edge whenever Demetrius Cade enters the room. Known to be a reflection of his bigoted father, most non-humans are wary of him. He’s all business: serious and overly ambitious when it comes to running the family empire. In a world where Morgons are just trying to be seen as equals and not some “other less than”.  Having a dragon hybrid as a nephew has changed all that for Demetrius. His heart is now opened and he’s ready to embrace a new way of thinking, especially where Shakara Icewing is concerned.

Shakara, a Morgan Healer, has been sneaking side glances at Demetrius Cade for a while now. He’s so formal and rigid, yet utterly captivating in unexpected ways.
And for whatever reason, there is a connection when they finally come face to face. It’s immediate, undeniable, and intoxicating all at once. What culminates is a fantastic read with an underlying thread of civil uprising in this world of humans and dragon kind.

Cleverly written, Dragon Heartstring ranks high on the fantasy must read list. With a parallel to real life current events wrapped in a fantasy world, it lends itself to a more believable feel overall.

Doctor Bad Boy (Frisky Beavers #2) by Ainsley Booth and Sadie Haller

A pediatric doctor with impeccable bedside manner during the day and a dom with a devastatingly kinky bedside manner at night! GAH! Take me to him now– I think I’m having palpitations! LOL!

I LOVED this read. Loved it! Fun, flirty, and feisty is how I describe these two. Meeting and spending the night together has become a life changing event for both Max and Violet. You MUST (not really, but really) read book one in the Frisky Beaver series to truly get the full impact of Max and his Violet obsession.

Honestly, I’m having a hard time even writing this review. I don’t want to inadvertently give anything away. I highlighted throughout this book, but find myself not wanting to spoil the funny little quips and adorable moments that are peppered throughout it. With the abundance of bed play and scenes that take place, the moments of levity really are spot on, making this one of my favorite reads in this genre for the year.

So, do yourself a favor. Grab book one, if you haven’t already. Enjoy the story of Gavin and Ellie while also getting to know the good doctor known as Max Donovan. Then have a defibrillator on standby when you begin Doctor Bad Boy. BDSM PERFECTION!

I give it 5 stars with a smirky orange juice smile!

The first time I met Violet Roberts, she gave me her submission for the night. The second time I met her, it was across a boardroom and man, was she pissed.
Now she insists we have a “conflict of interest”. She wants us to “move forward like grown-ups.”
But I can’t forget our single, scorching night together—when what I wanted and how I wanted it wasn’t a problem, because it nailed all her kinky buttons, too.

Max Donovan is a dirty, dirty man. Deliciously so. But the former child TV star turned renowned paediatrician and best friend to the prime minister is also my client.
One of us needs to be responsible, and it’s not going to be him.
So why can’t I forget how utterly incredible it was to be at his mercy? And what am I going to do when he takes his pursuit to the next level?

* A serious case of a one-night stand gone wrong (but not until after it went very, very right).

* Healthy boundaries and a double-dose of will power.
* Should that plan fail, the second course of treatment would be an air-tight contract and a solid cover story.

* Real doctors and lawyers will likely be appalled at the professional infractions inside this (thankfully fictional) erotic romance. We recommend they start with Prime Minister, the first book in the Frisky Beavers series. By the time they finish Gavin and Ellie’s book, they’ll be so enamoured with Max that they’ll forgive his transgressions in the pursuit of his filthy happily ever after ending.
